Washington Community Education (WCE) has developed the English Learning Online
(ELO) programs to expand its global educational outreach by offering live,
real-time, interactive, online language tutoring and teaching services to students in China, Taiwan,
and South Korea. By using innovative Internet technology, WCE provides a
cost-effective means of assisting international children as they strive to
acquire English listening and speaking skills.
Language experts have long known that as children grow older, it becomes more
difficult for them to acquire a new or second language. This is why WCE desires
to bring its services to children at an early age. The ELO programs are targeted
toward children in kindergarten through 8th grade, and they grant these students an opportunity to acquire the English language before pursuing their advanced secondary school educations.
WCE also understands the immense costs associated with traveling abroad to study
the English language. Other alternatives such as one-on-one phone tutoring are
also often simply unaffordable for international students. Rather than bringing
these students to the American classroom, therefore, WCE is determined to bring
the classroom to the students.
The ELO programs are innovative and affordable virtual learning services that
help international students to acquire English language skills, but the
programs’ benefits do not end there. ELO programs also ensure that international students have the opportunity to learn about the American culture and its people. The ELO programs positively affect the global perspective of the United States by creating a deeper and constructive understanding of the country and its people.
WCE offers two types of English Learning Online programs:
1. Small Group Tutoring Sessions
WCE tutors assist small groups of students with conversational, reading, and writing exercises that will help to build English listening and speaking skills. In online tutoring sessions, tutors work with small groups of one to four students to provide real-time guidance, instruction, and feedback.
2. Virtual Classrooms
As a still more affordable option, WCE provides students with a virtual classroom experience. Certified, degreed, United States English teachers work with students through the Internet to provide live instruction in real time. Classroom sizes may range from ten to fifty students.
To ensure quality instruction and to facilitate communication, WCE requires that, in the United States, ESL (English as a Second Language) instructional supervisors monitor both teachers and tutors who are assisting students. In China, Taiwan, and South Korea, native teachers will likewise oversee the students who are working with American teachers and tutors.
WCE’s English Learning Online experience works to enhance the global community by bringing the nations closer together and creating a better and brighter tomorrow. WCE is continually committed to promoting and providing innovative and affordable learning services to students who might not otherwise receive them.
